Jamieson delighted after Stirling take bite out of Redbacks

ATD Stirling Senators coach Don Jamieson has described Saturday's vital 112-97 win over the Perth Redbacks as an impressive team effort.

Stirling was able to maintain seventh spot on the men’s State Basketball League ladder while Perth will be ruing the perfect opportunity to secure its place in the eight, with Wildcats star Jesse Wagstaff playing his first game of the season.

Both sides entered the first break on 22 before the Senators pulled away and outscored the Redbacks in the remaining three quarters.

The Senators were able to minimise the effectiveness of the Redbacks stars Adrian Majstrovich (30 points), Joel Wagner (13) and Boomers squad member Wagstaff (14), which Jamieson said was the most pleasing aspect of the match.

“We’ve talked about the teams we are going to play and a lot of the teams have got some superstars in it, but the way we’ve decided to play the game, and everyone is fully behind the program, is we’ll play as a team and let those individual talented stars beat the team,” he said.

“We don’t believe that it’s possible if we are on our game. That’s the system we’re operating on, everybody is equal, everybody plays like a team.

“Obviously we’ve got some stand out players who make the numbers for us but we don’t look at what guys have done in the past, although we do count on in a little bit, it’s about what we’re doing on the night that matters.”

Mike Jones continued his outstanding form for the Senators with 38 points, including 18 from beyond the arc. He was well supported by Geordie Cullen (25 points), Chris Dodd and Lee Roberts (14 each).

Earlier in the night, the Redbacks women’s win ensured the Perth fans wouldn’t go home on the back of two losses after a thumping 68-36 performance against the Western Stainless Stirling Senators.

Marita Payne had 14 points for Perth, while Kelly Ellis was Stirling’s best with 11.

The loss left Stirling’s women in ninth position on the ladder with 10 points and Perth in eighth one win ahead on 12

Stirling will host the Mandurah Magic in round 13 of SBL action while the Redbacks face a tough trip to heated rivals Willetton.
