Buccs to look for inspiration in past glory

BUCCANEERS veteran Adam Rowe said the squad must take a page out of the Buccs’ championship playbook of 2000 if they are to resurrect their season.

“Back then it was a totally different ball game, we grinded out teams and basically beat up on them and I believe we need to get back to that,” he said.

“Once we got physical and intense on the weekend the crowd got involved and it was excellent.

“Why we cannot do that for 48 minutes we do not know but we are trying to put our finger on it.”

The forward is in his 11th season as a Buccaneer and is currently the only remaining 2000 championship team squad member still playing with the team.

Rowe marks his 200th appearance for the blue and gold tomorrow night as the Sun City Plumbing Geraldton Buccaneers take on Lakeside Lightning at Tip Top Stadium.

Geraldton are in the middle of a four game losing streak and are sitting in 12th position on the ladder.

Since the team’s inaugural season in 1989 they have missed the playoffs just once in 1998.

Rowe was quick to dismiss claims there was a team morale issue in the camp.

“Off the court we are all best mates but we need to get it together on court, if we can the sky is the limit,” he said.

Lakeside has lost just twice this year and sits on top of the SBL ladder after a 100-93 victory against the East Perth Eagles last weekend.

Jarrad Prue’s average of 20 rebounds a game leads the league while Ben Beran and Luke Payne average 27.6 and 25.5 points a game respectively.

Rowe said the Buccs needed to be ready for a long bomb barrage from last year’s grand finalists.

“They are different to other teams, they are shorter and like to shoot the ball a lot more,” he said.
