Buccs mixed fortunes

SUN City Plumbing Buccaneers are coming to terms with being without import Todd Brown for the opening road trip of the SBL season.

The prized American recruit has been wrapped in cotton wool since dislocating his shoulder at the weekend’s Pre- Season Blitz.

Buccs operations manager Scott Rubery said the swingman was doubtful for the March 19 and 20 games against Mandurah Magic and Cockburn Cougars.

He was optimistic he could return for the round two home clash against Rockingham Flames on March 20.

“He’s still pretty stiff and sore. He’s looking doubtful for week one,” he said.

“We’re just going to have to wait and see how he repairs, but we’re hoping it’s not long term.”

The Californian was due to be assessed by Buccs physio Brendan Jones yesterday afternoon.

Rubery said a formal approach to Everard Bartlett to extend his stand-in position for Michael Lay to cover a possible long-term absence of Brown had not been made.

“We haven’t gone down that path yet with Everard, but he’d certainly be in the mix if the outlook for Todd is not good,” he said.

Point guard Lay, the Buccs second import, is due to return by round three.

Brown collided with one of the Stirling Senators players two minutes before half-time of Sunday’s 47-31 win at the WA Basketball Stadium.

Brown said he was “bumped” about the injury which came after he lit up in Saturday’s wins over the South West Slammers and East Perth Eagles.

He said the alarm bells sounded when he reached up for a rebound in the Senators clash.

“I knew I had done something when I stretched out my hand and my shoulder crunched — which I think it was popping back into place,” he said.

“The doctor in Perth believes I’ve stretched my tendons.

“I’ve been told it’s not as bad as what it could be so I’m hopeful the recovery can be quick.”
