Excitement builds at Cockburn

The excitement keeps building around Wally Hagan Stadium for the 2011 SBL Season. This week Cougars Mens Basketball Team Head Coach Stephen Charlton took a big step towards getting back in the finals after missing out last season. Grant Davey, Sheldon McIntyre, Stephen Van Lit, and newcomer Ty Harrelson have all agreed to terms with the club.

On the Women’s side, Head Coach Fleur McIntyre has announced that 200 Game Life Member Vanessa Cahill will be suiting up this season. The long time team captain joined the Cougars as point guard at the age of 15. After taking last season off for her family, she is ready to get the Cougars back on track and help lead them into finals.

Grant Davey, team captain and long time Cockburn Cougar point guard will suit up another season for the Blue and Gold. Grant will be on his way to 250 games for the Cougars with one goal in mind. “We had a young team last season,” Davey said. “But they all have experience in the league and this season there are no excuses. We want to make the finals.” With the floor generals knowledge of the game and experience it gives the Cougars a great chance to do just that. Last season Davey averaged 9.4 points, 5.9 rebounds, and 5.6 assists.

Sheldon McIntyre looks to improve on a solid season last year as the Cougars small forward position. He averaged 9.2 points, 5.3 rebounds, and 3.5 assists including a 23 point 12 rebound performance to finish last season strong. As the Cougars Co-Captain the “Mac Attack” has the versatile skills allowing him to go inside and out. He also has strong basketball knowledge and feel for the game.

Talented youngster Steven Van Lit will look to step up his role as well. Last season the Cougar point guard averaged 26 minutes producing nearly 8 points and 3 assists per game. Van Lit is well known for his end of the game capabilities with two game winners in the final seconds last season. Steven also poured in 17 points in one quarter against SBL Champion Willetton on the road last season. His up tempo style and passing abilities will be important for the team this season.

Cockburn's Operation Manager Ty Harrelson will also suit up for the Cougars in 2011 Harrelson will offer a wealth of experience to the guard rotation after stints in Italy, Finland, Hungary, and several seasons in Germany. The Cougars are extremely excited about Harrelson's addition to the squad for 2011.

The Cougars will look to improve on the 8-18 record and 12th place finish from last season. More signings are expected in the near future as the club wants to lock in the team as soon as possible. Come check out the Cougars Men’s and Women’s teams as they compete in the SBL starting in March.
