"Tigers have edge" - Ducas

SUN City Plumbing Buccaneers assistant coach Aaron Ducas believes Willetton Tigers may hold the edge going into Saturday’s SBL grand final against Lakeside.

Ducas said the Tigers players could be more battle hardened after they dropped the axe on the Buccs in game three of the semi finals at Willetton on Sunday.

“Lakeside will be regarded as the favourites,” he said.

“But Willetton, having played two games back-to-back, may be more body-hardened and ready to go.

“Cameron Tovey and Daniel Johnson are more than capable of playing tough games week-in-weekout in the NBL, so there’s no reason why they can’t step up again next week against Lakeside.”

Ducas said the Tigers were unstoppable in the deciding clash which the Buccs lost 118-102.

“We shot the ball like any other game we’ve won this season, but they (Willetton) just made nearly every big shot, it was demoralising and took the wind out of the sails.”

The Tigers marched on after they levelled the series 1-1 with a crushing 108-79 win over the Buccs on Saturday.

Ducas said despite the disappointment of having to wait another year for a title tilt, the team had progressed from last season.

“We’ve definitely made improvements since last year. The guys’ attitudes have changed in they way they worked for each other this season,” he said.

“A lot of that comes down to the increase firepower we’ve had in the team.”

American shot-dropper Ryan Zamroz is set to depart Geraldton on Monday for a deal in the United Kingdom, but left the door open for a return to the Buccs in 2011.

Zamroz, the SBL’s top scorer with 845 points and 29.1 average per game, is close to signing terms with a British Basketball League outfit.

“I’m excited to play over there it’s an emerging league,” Zamroz said.

“I’m extremely thankful to the Buccs, I’ve had a great year in Geraldton, I certainly won’t close the door on a move back here.”
