Buccs take road win

THE Sun City Plumbing Buccaneers have one foot in the SBL semi finals after defeating Perry Lakes Hawks 108-91 in game one of their quarter final series.

The Buccs out scored their opponents 33-20 in the final quarter to secure the win and bring a one game lead back to Geraldton.

Ryan Zamroz was the top scorer for the Buccs with 29-points while Brian Connelly chipped in with 22-points. Coach Ray Evans was pleased with the win but disappointed with the start.

“We didn’t start well at all but were in the game at half time,” Evans said.

“We did what we had to, to win the game.”

Scores were tied at 44 going into the main change.

The Hawks had clawed their way back from four points down at quarter time to level the game at the half.

NBL guard Peter Crawford was the star for Perry Lakes with 30-points but he lacked support.

Robert Kempf scored 25-points and Martin Vahala chimed in with 16 but they were the only three players in double figures for the home side.

Evans said that his side’s second half defence was excellent.

“Our defence wasn’t where we wanted it to be in the first half but in the second half it definitely was,” he said.

“Crawford hit some big shots but he wasn’t creating chances for other guys.

“He took a lot of jump shots from long range which is what we wanted.”

There is still a lot of improvement to come before game two according to Evans.

“We didn’t play great and it was a very scrappy game,” he said.

“We didn’t start well but they didn’t play good either.

“It was a typical finals game but we didn’t expect to play like we did.”

The Buccs and Hawks now move their series to Geraldton for the final two games at Tip Top Stadium.

One win from the remaining two games will place the Buccs in the semi finals.

“It was great to win in Perth and now we will throw everything we have into game two at home,” Evans said.

Game two is scheduled for Saturday evening and if necessary game three will be played Sunday.
