Redbacks comeback to sting Wolves (Saturday wrap)

Perth Redbacks overturned a massive deficit to claim a 118-109 win in game one of its men’s State Basketball League quarter-finals series against Wanneroo Wolves.

The Redbacks trailed by 16 late in the third quarter but dominated the Wolves in the last period to move within one win of claiming the best-of-three series.

Jon Meriweather led Perth’s comeback with 39 points for the game while fellow import Zachary Coverstone also had 39 for the Wolves.

Geraldton Buccaneers beat Perry Lakes Hawks 108-91 to move into the box seat of that series, with it having two chances to clinch at home.

Ryan Zamroz had 29 points to lead the Buccaneers, which led by just six with five minutes left but took a commanding advantage with a 14-2 run.

Perry Lakes faces a massive challenge to get through despite Peter Crawford scoring a game-high 30 points.

Willetton Tigers smashed the out-of-form Goldfields Giants 101-68, led by Cam Tovey (31 points, six assists).

Goldfields, which were led by Ryan Hulme (23 points), will need to win twice at Willetton next week to advance.

Lakeside Lightning easily accounted for East Perth Eagles, winning 98-76 to make the top side virtual certainties to advance.

Luke Payne was Lakeside’s best performer with 25 points, while Steven Weigh finished with 27 for the Eagles.

In women’s action, Wanneroo upset second seed Rockingham Flames 79-74, Perth won 54-47 at East Perth and Perry Lakes beat Mandurah 78-68 on the road.
