Tigers fail to strike on top spot (Saturday Wrap)

Lakeside Lightning finished top of the men’s State Basketball League after previous leaders Willetton Tigers lost to Perth Redbacks 115-106.

Willetton just needed to win to finish top, but Ryan Neil (29 points) led the Redbacks to victory, while Cam Tovey top-scored for the Tigers with 41.

Lakeside will play East Perth Eagles in the quarter-finals, beginning next weekend, while Willetton meets Goldfields Giants, Geraldton Buccaneers drew Perry Lakes Hawks and Perth plays Wanneroo Wolves.

All series until the Grand Final are best-of-three, with game one of the quarter-finals next weekend.

Wanneroo finished fifth and condemned Goldfields to seventh spot with a 96-87 victory, with Greg Hire (21 points) top-scoring for the Wolves.

Perry Lakes secured sixth spot by thrashing Rockingham Flames 109-91, with Peter Crawford best for the Hawks with 23 points.

Geraldton beat East Perth 91-89 to condemn the Eagles to eighth spot, holding off a late comeback.

The Buccaneers led by 11 at the start of the last quarter but fell behind with 1:23 left, before Ryan Zamroz put Geraldton back in front.

Southwest Slammers ended its winless season at the final chance, beating Cockburn Cougars 81-68 thanks to Jason Miller’s 26 points and Mandurah beat Stirling 77-74.

In women’s action, Perry Lakes secured third spot with a 64-60 upset of Rockingham, Perth finished fourth after losing 61-52 to Willetton, Mandurah beat Stirling 70-46 and Southwest beat Cockburn 66-65, its first win of the year.

In the quarter-finals, Willetton will play Lakeside, Rockingham meets Wanneroo, Perry Lakes plays Mandurah and Perth drew East Perth.
