Tigers secure top spot (Women's Review)

Southlands Willetton Tigers guaranteed a first place finish in the women’s State Basketball League with a thrilling 66-64 win over Glasscraft Wanneroo Wolves in the penultimate round.

Although second placed Rockingham Flames could finish level with Willetton, the Tigers hold the head-to-head tiebreaker, ensuring top spot and a first round finals matchup with Lakeside Lightning or Mandurah Magic.

Kate Malpass had 18 points and seven assists to lead Willetton to its comeback victory, while veteran Sue Williams top-scored with 16 for Wanneroo, which will finish sixth or seventh.

Southside Mitsubishi Perth Redbacks enhanced its chances of finishing third with an upset 65-50 win at Rockingham, thanks to Marita Payne’s 21 points and 14 boards.

Perth needs to beat Willetton in the final round or hope Total Connections Perry Lakes Hawks loses at least once to finish third, while Rockingham needs to win just one of its two games next week to guarantee second spot.

Metropolis Fremantle Cockburn Cougars dented Mandurah’s chances of sneaking into the top four with an upset 73-56 win over the Magic, with Sam O’Neill (19 points) top-scoring for the Cougars.

Mandurah recovered to beat Lakeside 75-65 the next night, leaving it with a chance to finish anywhere from fourth to eighth, with it needing to beat Stirling, hope Perry Lakes loses to Rockingham and beat the Hawks by more than six to make the four.

The Lightning can avoid eighth spot if it wins next week and the Magic lose twice.

Australian Central East Perth Eagles beat Carpet Court Southwest Slammers 77-59 in its last game of the season, led by Kelsey Maffin (15 points).

The Eagles need Perry Lakes to lose twice to make the top four, with both Perth and the Hawks holding the tiebreaker over it.

Cockburn mathematically ended AND1 Kalamunda Eastern Suns finals hopes with a 52-40 win, thanks to Emma Pass’ 16 points.

The Suns struggled to overcome Southwest the previous night, winning 67-61 with Sarah-Jane Knox (18 points) top-scoring.
