June SBL Award Winners Announced

Southside Mitsubishi Redbacks forward and NBL Rookie of the Year Jesse Wagstaff and Southlands Willetton Tigers star Kate Malpass are the PowerPlayers of the Month winners for June.

Lakeside Lightning championship winning coach Andy Stewart claimed the Mens Coach of the Month and the Tigers Glenn Clarke claimed his second Womens Coach of the Month award.

All four will receive $50 vouchers to PowerPlay Sports in Subiaco as a result of their terrific achievements throughout June.

Wagstaff joined the Redbacks in the SBL after an outstanding NBL rookie season and has continued his championship winning form in his 20 outings for the Redbacks.

His performances in June were strong averaging 27.5 points and 12.2 rebounds per game over the month to lead his side to a 3-3 record in June and fourth place on the standings.

Kate Malpass continued to lead the Tigers charge towards back-to-back championships after a strong WNBL season with the Go for 2&5 Perth Lynx.

The Lynx guard had a strong month in June averaging 18.3 points, 6.0 rebounds and 4.3 assists over four games, her Tigers team undefeated in all four. Andy Stewart guided the Lightning to a 5-1 record during June which including a strong four point victory over fellow top of the table contenders Geraldton.

The Lightning ended June well and truly entrenched in the top three on the standings, three games clear of the next teams, Wanneroo and Perth.

Clarke claims his second monthly award, having also taken out the honours in April. The defending champions had a strong month with a 4-0 record.

The Tigers beat 2009 runner-up Mandurah as well as fellow championship contenders ROckingham to finish June three games clear of second placed Rockingham.
