Wagner helps Redbacks dunk Slammers

Southside Mitsubishi Redbacks' point guard Joel Wagner broke the club assists' record in Saturday night's State Basketball League game against the Bunbury Slammers.

Wagner accumulated his record-breaking 24 assists along with 12 points, six rebounds and three steals in his team's 125 to 74 home-game win.

Forward Jon Meriweather was the Redbacks' highest scorer with 29 along with 11 rebounds while shooting guard Ryan Neill scored 28 along with seven rebounds.

The Redbacks' men also won a tight away-game encounter on Friday night against the Stirling Senators 92 to 88.

Meriweather and Neill were both the highest scorers with 22 each while small forward Jesse Wagstaff had 21 along with nine rebounds, four assists and four steals.

Centre Daniel Maddox also contributed strongly with 10 points and 10 rebounds.

The two wins see the Redbacks' men's team move up one place to fourth in the 14-team competition.

The Redbacks' women's team also had two strong wins beating the Senators 69 to 37 and the Slammers 75 to 42.

Redbacks' forward Brooke Hiddlestone top-scored against the Senators with 21 along with 16 rebounds, while Marita Payne was their next highest scorer on 19 and 11 rebounds.

Hiddlestone was also the top-scorer against the Slammers with 26 along with eight rebounds.

Shooting guard Kerise Delcoure and Payne were the next highest scorers with 14 each.

Delcoure also had two assists and three steals while Payne also had 10 rebounds, four assists and two steals.

The Redbacks' women's team moved up one place to third in the 12-team competition.

The action continues this Saturday night for the Redbacks in an away game against the Rockingham Flames at the Mike Barnett Stadium, with the women's game starting at 6PM and the men's game at 8PM.
