Wolves sneak into top four (Mens Review)

Titan Interactive Wanneroo Wolves took advantage of poor performances from its rivals to climb into the top four of the men’s State Basketball League.

SKILLED Goldfields Giants and Southside Mitsubishi Perth Redbacks both suffered losses while Wanneroo beat Total Connections Perry Lakes Hawks and Carpet Court Southwest Slammers to move into fourth spot at 14-9.

Zachary Coverstone had 25 points and 12 rebounds to a 106-92 win against Perry Lakes, assisted by Sebastian Salinas (23 points), while Robert Kempf had 31 points and 15 boards for the Hawks but it wasn’t enough to stop his side slumping to its second loss in three games.

Wanneroo were far too strong for the Slammers the next night, winning 105-80 on the back of a strong effort from Greg Hire (25 points, 14 rebounds).

Australian Central East Perth Eagles kept its finals hopes alive with an 89-78 victory over Perth, knocking the Redbacks out of the top four.

Steven Weigh bounced back from being cut from the Australian Boomers squad to star with 40 points and 11 rebounds, while Ryan Neil had 31 points for Perth.

Sun City Plumbing Geraldton Buccaneers kept its hopes of finishing first alive by beating Goldfields 96-78, meaning it can go top if it beats Southlands Willetton Tigers next week.

Ben Pepper had 24 points and 22 rebounds in a dominant performance for Geraldton while John Vaudreuil top-scored for the Giants with 15.

Geraldton threw away a 13 points lead in the fourth quarter to lose 104-102 at Perth the previous night, seeing it fall from top spot.

Jesse Wagstaff (33 points) and Neil (32 points) were in great touch for the Redbacks while Ryan Zamroz had 23 points for the Buccaneers.

Willetton moved into first place after beating Cockburn Cougars 96-79 and Mandurah Magic 119-93.

Ty Shaw had 20 points and 12 rebounds to lead it against Cockburn, while Daniel Johnson top-scored with 29 in its win at Mandurah.

Lakeside Lightning stayed close to the top two with a 95-88 win over ATD Stirling Senators, hurting Stirling’s finals hopes.

Luke Payne had 27 points for the Lightning, while Ed Morris Jr had 36 points and eight blocks for Stirling but couldn’t stop his side falling to level on wins with ninth placed East Perth.

Stirling stayed in the eight despite its loss to Lakeside after beating Rockingham Flames 106-102 the night before, led by Carmichael Olowoyo (28 points).

Lakeside thrashed Kalamunda 120-103 the previous night on the back of a dominant effort by Payne, who had 45 points.
