Buccs surrender top spot (Friday Night Wrap)

Geraldton Buccaneers threw away top spot in the men’s State Basketball League with a 104-102 loss to Perth Redbacks.

The Buccaneers led by 13 early in the fourth quarter but Perth took the lead with four minutes left and held on to move into the top four, while Geraldton dropped to second.

Jesse Wagstaff led Perth with 33 points and 15 rebounds just one day after he was cut from the Australian Boomers squad, while Ryan Zamroz top-scored for Geraldton with 23.

Willetton Tigers took Geraldton’s place in top spot after beating Cockburn Cougars 96-79, its sixth straight win, led by Ty Shaw (20 points).

Wanneroo Wolves’ hopes of sneaking into the top four were boosted with a 106-92 win against Perry Lakes Hawks after a stunning comeback.

The Wolves trailed by 19 early in the fourth quarter but outscored the Hawks 47-14 in the final period, led by Zachary Coverstone (25 points, 12 rebounds), while Robert Kempf had 31 points for Perry Lakes but couldn’t stop it falling to eighth.

Stirling Senators beat Rockingham Flames 106-102 to consolidate its place in the top eight.

Former NBL player Carmichael Olowoyo was Stirling’s best with 28 points, while Carlin Hughes had 31 points for the Flames.

Lakeside Lightning moved within one game of top spot after beating Kalamunda Eastern Suns 120-103.

Luke Payne (45 points) and Jarrad Pure (25 rebounds) both were outstanding for Lakeside, while Austin Bruton top-scored for Kalamunda with 33.

In women’s games, Lakeside all but ensured a top eight spot with a 76-44 win over Kalamunda, ending the Suns’ hopes, while Perry Lakes beat Wanneroo 66-60, Willetton defeated Cockburn 62-54 and Rockingham thrashed Stirling 91-52.
