Redbacks look to soar into top four (Womens Preview)

Southside Mitsubishi Perth Redbacks will be trying to get back into the top four of the women’s State Basketball League with a win at Australian Central East Perth Eagles.

The Redbacks fell out of the four after losing 56-50 to Lakeside last week while East Perth ended its two-match losing streak with a 75-49 thrashing of Kalamunda to virtually ensure it will finish third.

The game may be determined by the matchup of four of the league’s best front court players, with Marita Payne and Brooke Hiddlestone in great form for Perth and Ashley Gilmore and Samantha Norwood crucial to East Perth’s success this year.

Glasscraft Wanneroo Wolves will have to beat Total Connections Perry Lakes Hawks for Perth to get back into the top four, and Wanneroo will be trying to get itself a more favourable finals matchup.

The Wolves are desperate to finish in the top six to avoid a first round matchup with either of the top two sides, while Perry Lakes will be trying to recover from a loss to Lakeside in its last match and strengthen its grip on fourth place.

Lakeside Lightning can all but end AND1 Kalamunda Eastern Suns’ finals hopes if it can win that crucial matchup and extend its three-game winning streak.

If Lakeside beats the Suns and can get past ATD Stirling Senators as expected the next night, Kalamunda will be at least two games outside the eight with four to play.

Kalamunda has lost three of its last four and is under strength with star player Melissa Moyle still absent with a leg injury.

Southlands Willetton Tigers will move a step closer to finishing in first place if it can become the first side to win at Mandurah Magic this year.

Mandurah will virtually ensure its place in the finals with a win but Willetton has recovered from a mid-season slump, winning its last three games and will be favourites in the Grand Final rematch.

Willetton meets Metropolis Fremantle Cockburn Cougars the previous night and should beat the out of contention side, which has lost five straight.

Rockingham Flames are desperate to keep up the pressure on Willetton and should do so with a win over the Senators.

Stirling won its last game but has won only three this year, while Rockingham will be hoping to recover from a disappointing loss to the Tigers last week.

Wanneroo meets Carpet Court Southwest Slammers and will be heavy favourites, with the Slammers just six games away from a winless season.
