Buccs, Giants face season defining test (Mens Game Previews)

SKILLED Goldfields Giants and Sun City Plumbing Geraldton Buccaneers face potentially season-defining road trips in round 13 of the men’s State Basketball League.

Both will play three games in three days, with Geraldton trying to strengthen its grip on top spot and Goldfields looking to consolidate its place in the top four.

The Giants’ biggest game comes on Monday against Southside Mitsubishi Perth Redbacks, the last game in its trip, with Perth its main competition for a top four place.

Perth has won its last three and will start as slight favourite against a team it could meet in the first week of the finals.

Goldfields also face a massive test against Southlands Willetton Tigers on Saturday night, but should have little trouble beating winless Carpet Court Southwest Slammers on the Sunday.

Willetton sits second having won seven of its last eight games and will be desperate to maintain pressure on the first placed Buccaneers.

Geraldton meets Lakeside Lightning, Rockingham Flames and Cockburn Cougars, with its clash against the Lightning its biggest test.

Lakeside are third and will be reeling after its loss to Wanneroo last week, but if Geraldton can beat the Lightning it has a great chance to win all three games on its trip and would be favoured to finish the season on top.

Perth Wildcats star Steven Weigh will be trying to pick up his first win with Australian Central East Perth Eagles when it meets Cockburn.

East Perth has lost all three games Weigh has played in, but he and Wildcats teammate Damian Martin should lead it to victory over a side which has lost eight straight.

Total Connections Perry Lakes Hawks will put its five-game winning streak on the line when it hosts Perth.

The Hawks have won five straight to climb back into the top eight, but Perth will be boosted by the return of star import Jon Meriweather from an ankle injury.

Titan Interactive Wanneroo Wolves play Rockingham in a game with significant finals implications.

Wanneroo is eighth after breaking its three-game losing streak last round but Rockingham are just three wins behind it with a game in hand and will be back in contention for the top eight if it can win.

ATD Stirling Senators travel to AND1 Kalamunda Eastern Suns with a win to boost its finals hopes significantly.

Kalamunda is out of contention having lost six straight but the Senators are just one win outside the eight, thanks to the good form of import Ed Morris Jr.

The Suns also meet Mandurah Magic, with new Mandurah import Taylor Mullenax needing to lead his side to a victory to keep it in the top eight race.
