Wolves knock Lightning from top (Saturday Night Wrap)

Wanneroo Wolves ended Lakeside Lightning’s stint at the top of the league with an upset 102-97 victory in the men’s State Basketball League.

Lakeside came back from an 18-point second quarter deficit to tie the score with less than two minutes remaining, but Wanneroo hit five crucial free-throws in the final minute to hold on.

Guard Seb Salinas led Wanneroo to the shock win with 31 points, while Lakeside’s five-game winning streak ended despite Ben Beran’s 35 points.

Geraldton Buccaneers moved up to first place with a 108-99 victory over Mandurah Magic.

Ryan Zamroz had 37 points to lead Geraldton to its sixth straight win while Taylor Mullenax had 32 points and nine rebounds for Mandurah, which fell to three wins outside the top eight.

Stirling Senators shocked East Perth Eagles and boosted its finals chances with a 107-96 victory.

Ed Morris Jr led the Senators with 32 points while East Perth is yet to record a win with Steven Weigh in the team, despite the Wildcats guard scoring 28 against Stirling.

Goldfields Giants trailed in the third quarter but came back to beat Cockburn Cougars 83-73, led by Ryan Hulme (25 points).

Perry Lakes picked up its fifth straight win and consolidated its top eight spot with a 106-92 win over Rockingham Flames, led by Martin Vahala (34 points).

Elsewhere, Perth Redbacks thrashed Southwest Slammers 104-69, with Jesse Wagstaff (35 points) top-scoring and Cameron Tovey starred with 25 points in Willetton Tigers’ 109-64 win over Kalamunda Eastern Suns.

In the women’s games, Willetton overcame a late deficit to beat Kalamunda 59-54, Rockingham beat Perry Lakes 85-71, Wanneroo defeated Lakeside 56-53, East Perth thrashed Stirling 97-67 and Perth annihilated Southwest 91-44.
