Crucial weekend for Flames (Week 12 Womens Preview)

Rockingham Flames will be trying to strengthen its grip on top spot by winning both games of an important doubleheader in round 12 of the women’s State Basketball League.

The Flames open the round with a clash at AND1 Kalamunda Eastern Suns before hosting Total Connections Perry Lakes Hawks the next night.

Rockingham moved into top spot and extended its winning streak to seven with a defeat of previous leaders Southlands Willetton Tigers last week and will be favoured to consolidate its lead by sweeping the doubleheader.

Kalamunda had the bye last week and has much to play for, with it on the fringe of finals contention and desperate to keep pace with the top eight.

Perry Lakes had a mixed weekend with a thrashing of Australian Central East Perth Eagles followed up by a shock loss to ATD Stirling Senators, giving Stirling its second win of the year, and the Hawks will be desperate to bounce back.

Willetton will be trying to recover from a dismal round last week when it hosts Kalamunda.

The Tigers entered the weekend having won 11 straight but lost to Lakeside and Rockingham, and will be desperate for a win against the Suns to keep pace with the in-form Flames.

Glasscraft Wanneroo Wolves and Lakeside Lightning meet in a match with massive finals implications.

Wanneroo is sixth but only one loss ahead of ninth placed Kalamunda, while Lakeside is eighth and trying to keep up its much improved form.

A win for either side would go a long way towards securing postseason action, with the Lightning likely to be high on confidence after its shock win over the Tigers.

Stirling will be trying to carry over the momentum from its shock win last week but will start as massive underdogs against East Perth.

The Eagles have lost three of five and need to improve to keep pace with the top two, with Stirling’s Michelle Joy, who had 32 points in its win over Perry Lakes, the player it must shut down to secure a win.

Southside Mitsubishi Perth Redbacks should be far too strong for Carpet Court Southwest Slammers.

Perth climbed to fifth with wins over Wanneroo and Cockburn last round and is just one win outside the top four, while Southwest remains winless after having the bye last week.
