Lightning claim top spot (Friday Night Wrap)

Lakeside Lightning moved to the top of the ladder after defeating previous leaders Willetton Tigers 104-93 in the men’s State Basketball League.

Lakeside was led by import Luke Payne, who had 39 points and Ben Beran added 27 while Daniel Johnson was Willetton’s best with 33 points.

Willetton fell to third with its fourth loss of the season while it was Lakeside’s fourth straight win.

Strong performances from Perth Wildcats stars Damian Martin and Steven Weigh weren’t enough as East Perth Eagles lost 109-105 to Perry Lakes Hawks.

Peter Crawford had 23 points to lead Perry Lakes to its third straight victory and put it on the verge of the top eight.

Weigh scored 29 in his first game of the year for the Eagles and Martin had 14 points and five assists in his return.

Perth Redbacks ended a two game losing streak with a 116-83 thrashing of Wanneroo Wolves.

Jon Meriweather was the star for Perth with 36 points and 15 rebounds while Seb Salinas was Wanneroo’s best with 27 points.

In the women’s games, Lakeside caused a massive upset with a 77-67 victory over Willetton.

The Tigers had won 11 straight but Courtney Bayliss (17 points) led Lakeside to its third straight win.

Elsewhere, Perry Lakes jumped to third with an 87-52 thrashing of East Perth and Perth defeated Wanneroo 70-56.
