Lightning return to top eight (Week Ten WSBL Review)

Lakeside Lightning moved into the top eight with an impressive double in round ten of the women’s State Basketball League.

Lakeside beat local rivals Metropolis Fremantle Cockburn Cougars 48-47 before upsetting Southside Mitsubishi Perth Redbacks 68-60 the next night.

Heidi McNeill led the Lightning with 20 points in its thrilling comeback win over Cockburn while youngster Courtney Byrnes top scored for it with 19 points as it shocked the Redbacks.

Rockingham Flames jumped ahead of Australian Central East Perth Eagles with a 78-67 win.

Casey Haggar (21 points) was Rockingham’s best as it moved ahead of the Eagles into second place while Ashley Gilmore had 24 points and 15 rebounds for East Perth.

Rockingham beat Mandurah Magic 67-63 earlier in the round to maintain its unbeaten home record.

Kaye Tucker and Gail Eikhoudt had 14 points each for the Flames while Shelley Boston top scored for the Magic with 15.

AND1 Kalamunda Eastern Suns ended Glasscraft Wanneroo Wolves’ three game winning streak with a 70-57 upset win.

Melissa Moyle continued her great form for the Suns with 24 points while Meghan D’Arcy had 17 points for the Wolves.

Total Connections Perry Lakes Hawks survived a scare to beat Carpet Court Southwest Slammers 70-65.

The Hawks hit just one field goal in the final quarter but held off Southwest’s late comeback with Tanya Kelly (13 points) top scoring for the victors.

Southwest were also gallant against Southlands Willetton Tigers but fell 69-55.

Melissa Marsh led the Tigers with 18 points in the absence of Kate Malpass while Kate Fielding had 13 points for the Slammers.

Cockburn bounced back to beat ATD Stirling Senators 62-47, led by Taryn Priestly (16 points).

Michelle Joy was in outstanding form for Stirling with 17 points and 15 rebounds but it wasn’t enough to prevent it falling to its eight straight loss.
