Redbacks face tough test

The Southside Mitsubishi Redbacks’ plays the Geraldton Buccaneers this weekend in what is one of the toughest State Basketball League away games.

It is a hard assignment for the Redbacks as Geraldton are in potent form having won four of their last five games, which sees them in second place in the 14-team competition with a season record of eight wins and three losses.

Geraldton’s high position on the ladder is no surprise given their formidable line-up that includes in-form US import and shooting guard Ryan Zamroz, fellow shooting guard and league veteran Tom Witts, point-guard and European League player Daniel Thomas, former National Basketball League player and US NBA draftee Ben Pepper and tough big-man Matt Wundenberg.

The Redbacks’ team however has demonstrated that its playing stocks go deep with their having won three of their last four games without star US import Jon Meriweather. They will be looking to point guard Joel Wagner, shooting guards Jarrad Prior and Ryan Neill, forward Jesse Wagstaff and tough US import and centre Daniel Maddox to bring with their recent strong form into this game.

Redbacks’ coach David Harris has called for a strong defensive performance from all players to hold down the talented Geraldton line-up.

“It is important to take the momentum away from them by strongly and physically defending all of their players."

"If we can do that, I believe we have the scoring talent and strength of character within our player group that will ensure we are competitive in this toughest of venues for opposition teams”.

The potential match-ups are scintillating for any basketball aficionado with the Redbacks’ Wagner up against Geraldton’s Thomas, Prior and Neill against Zamroz and Witts, Wagstaff against Wundenburg and Maddox against Pepper. The outcome of these vital duals will very much determine the final result of this game.

There will be a small contingent of Redbacks’ supporters travelling to Geraldton to watch what is expected to be a very exciting encounter. Tip-off is at 7.30PM this Saturday night (8th May) at the Tip-Top Basketball stadium.
