WSBL Game Previews

Last year’s Minor Premiers Total Connections Perry Lakes Hawks face Australian Central East Perth Eagles and Southlands Willetton Tigers in a tough doubleheader which highlights round nine of the women’s State Basketball League.

The Hawks are coming off a disappointing 73-81 loss to Wanneroo last week and face an even tougher tests against the league’s top two sides this weekend.

It meets second placed East Perth on Friday, with the Eagles sure to be fresh after having the bye last round.

Ashley Gilmore and Samantha Norwood will be the key players for the Eagles, while Dana-Renae Jones has been in tremendous form for Perry Lakes, with 27 points and 15 rebounds against the Wolves.

Willetton will start as favourites against the Hawks with the advantage of not having a game the night before.

The Tigers have won nine straight, with the improvement in recent weeks of youngster Jasmine Hooper, who had 14 points and 10 rebounds in limited minutes in her side’s 68-50 win over Lakeside last round, a massive boost to an already strong side.

East Perth backs up its clash with Perry Lakes with a visit to Metropolis Fremantle Cockburn Cougars.

The Eagles will start heavy favourites with the Cougars having lost four of its last five before having the bye last weekend.

AND1 Kalamunda Eastern Suns are in good form and have a real chance of knocking off last year’s Grand Finalists Mandurah Magic.

The Suns have won three of five to recover from a nightmare start, with the great form of Melissa Moyle a big factor.

Star youngster Adrienne Jones missed Kalamunda’s win over Southwest and loss to Perth last weekend but she is expected to return soon after she unfortunately missed out on selection in the final Australian under 17 women’s team, being cut at the final hurdle.

Mandurah remains winless on the road after losing to Lakeside last week before beating Stirling at home, and will be desperate to end its travelling problems.

Rockingham Flames have won three straight and should extend its good run by thrashing ATD Stirling Senators.

Kaye Tucker had 29 points and nine boards in Rockingham’s thrashing of Southwest last week while Michelle Joy was the only Stirling player to reach double figures in points in its loss to Mandurah.

Glasscraft Wanneroo Wolves secured consecutive wins for the first time this season by beating the Hawks and should consolidate its top eight spot further by beating Carpet Court Southwest Slammers.

Rebecca Mercer continued her good form for the Wolves last week while the Slammers remain winless.
