Redbacks have too much sting for Senators

The Southside Mitsubishi Redbacks’ teams bounced back strongly from last week’s disappointing losses in beating the Stirling Senators in Friday night’s State Basketball League games.

The Redbacks’ men’s team maintained their unbeaten 2010 home game record at Belmont Oasis by leading from start to finish in their 114 to 88 point win over the Senators. Shooting guard Jarrad Prior, who scored the first eight-points of the game by the two minute mark, top-scored for the Redbacks with a total of 27 points along with six rebounds, five assists and three steals.

Fellow shooting guard Ryan Neill was their next highest scorer with 21 points while point guard Joel Wagner scored 16 points together with ten assists and four steals. Centre Daniel Maddox scored 15 points and five rebounds while forward Jess Wagstaff scored 11 points, five rebounds and three assists.

18-year-old Rob Cassir also scored 11 points for the Redbacks along with three assists and two rebounds, while centre Reece Dempster made the most of his 12 minutes on court in bringing down six rebounds and scoring five points.

Centre Geordie Cullen was the Senator’s and game’s top-scorer with a strong 38 points at a field goal percentage of 89 along with five rebounds and two assists. Forward Will O’Neal was their next highest scorer with 12 points while small-forward Justin Eckhardt scored nine points along with four rebounds.

The win sees the Redbacks’ men with a season record of six wins and three losses and in fourth-place in the 14-team competition.

Former Australian Opals squad member Marita Payne, pictured, had an immediate positive impact in the Redbacks’ women’s teams 69 to 49 win against the Senators. Payne was the game-high scorer with 16 points along with 12 rebounds Forward Frances Clarke was the Redbacks’ next highest scorer with 12-points together with six rebounds while small-forward Martine Pearman scored eight points, five rebounds and three assists.

Guard Emma Berryman top-scored for the Senators with 14 points while guard/forward Emily Fielding scored 10 points and 11 rebounds.

The Redbacks’ women’s team now has a season record of five wins and three losses and is in fifth-place in the 12-team competition.

The basketball action continues tonight with the Redbacks‘ playing the star-studded Willetton teams at the Willetton Basketball Stadium in Burrendah Boulevard. Tip-off for the women’s game is at 6PM and 8PM for the men’s game.
