Tigers win cross-town rivalry
Cockburn had been within five points as late as the third quarter but Willetton outscored the Cougars 46-27 over the game’s final 20 minutes to win comfortably.
It wasn’t enough to please Tigers coach Shayne Hampel though, who said his side must improve.
“If we’re on all guns right now we might be in a bit of trouble,” he said.
Daniel Johnson top scored for Willetton with 31 points while Mark Jones, who missed much of the second half with a groin injury, had 16 of his 22 before half-time.
Christian Cavanaugh again performed well for Cockburn in his third game this season with 24 points while star forward Bryce Burch wasn’t at his best with just 10 points.
Cockburn struggled to control the ball with 30 turnovers for the game, leading to its first home loss of the year.
Hampel was frustrated with his team but said it is headed in the right direction.
“It wasn’t as easy as I think it looked in the end but the guys showed if they play some defence they can actually start stopping some teams,” he said.
Cam Tovey missed both games last weekend while on holiday but returned for Willetton and had 15 points.
In the women’s game, Willetton extended its winning streak to seven with a 80-46 win over Metropolis Fremantle Cockburn Cougars.
The Tigers were dominant, leading 28-13 at the first break and extending the margin to 20 five minutes into the second quarter.
Melissa Marsh had 14 first quarter points on her way to 23 for the game for Willetton. Brittany Morgan had 16 points and Kate Malpass scored 14 and had 10 assists.
Emma Pass (15 points) was the only player to reach double figures in scoring for Cockburn, which made just 27 percent of its field goal attempts and had 30 turnovers.
The Cougars fall to 3-5 for the season while Willetton remains undefeated since losing its opening game of the season.
