Buccs chase SBL leaders

GERALDTON Sun City Plumbing Buccaneers are hot on the heels of SBL ladder leaders Lakeside Lightning after a sensational round six road trip over the weekend.

The Buccs gave the tall timbered East Perth Eagles the chop to win 101-82 on Saturday which was backed up with a 98-85 victory against Willetton Tigers yesterday.

It was a fairytale return for Ben Pepper who marked his comeback with the Buccs and played a significant role in both games.

The victories pushed the Buccs to third on the ladder and underscored their credentials as serious contenders for the title.

Ryan Zamroz, (32 points) Daniel Thomas (18 points) and Brian Connolly (16 points) inflicted the most damage against the Tigers at Willetton Basketball Stadium.

Pepper chimed in with 12 points to add to the six-point tally he accumulated against the Eagles.

The Buccs came back from four points down at the interval to out-score Willetton 52-35 in the second half.

They took the same approach against the Eagles with a 55-38 second-half score.

This was after leading by two at the interval.

Coach Ray Evans’ said his players had to call on all their defencive qualities to ensure the two wins.

“Both games were really physical as we expected,” he said.

“But we felt really confident and that was visible in the way the guys played.”

Evans said his team was determined to hold off a late surge by Willetton when the Buccs’ lead was cut to one point in the closing stages of the game.

“They [Willetton] fought their way back into the game and we really hung tough,” he said.

“We really took it up to them and that allowed us to pull away.

“That was the most positive aspect of the win because in previous games we tended to drop off when the pressure was on.”
