Evans demands physical approach from Buccs

RAY Evans expects his players to take a prison yard approach into the two opening away fixtures to South West Slammers and Mandurah Magic this weekend.

The Geraldton Sun City Buccaneers coach believes his team have had a disrupted preseason with the culmination of the local competition.

He admitted his players were far from polished, but expects no less than two hard fought wins to kick-start their campaign.

“I would have liked better preparation,” he said.

“To be honest, I doubt we’ll play great basketball. [But] I hope we play gritty and tough basketball and get the wins that way.”

Buccs skipper Matt Wundenberg, who aggravated a back complaint in the GABA finals, said he was fit to play.

He acknowledged it could take time for the team to find their rhythm, but said the players were in tip-top shape.

“We’ve been training three time a week in between the local comp, so as fitness goes we should be OK,” he said.

American imports Ryan Zamroz and Brian Connelly will be keen to prove their worth in their first competitive hit-out on Australian soil. Evans said both had settled in well, but it would take time for them to bed in on the floor.

“They’re great guys and they get on really well with everyone, which is a great start,” he said.

“It’s going to take time for them to gel it won’t happen straight away.

“Hopefully, over the next month, we get to where we want to be as a team and improve from there.”

The Slammers and Magic finished bottom of the ladder last year, with only six and three wins respectively, but Evans is not taking that for granted.

“It’s a new season so everyone is on a level playing field,” he said.

Young Buccs Luke Wrensted, Lou Causer, Jordan Myers and Clayton Dann face big expectations this season.

Evans urged them to repay their club’s faith.

“A couple of them have had a couple of years’ experience no and they really do need to take the next step,” he said.

“They need to push for court time and really make the most of their opportunities.

“They need to think between themselves if they are one of theteam or not.”
