Schmechtig Adds Further Depth to Eagles

East Perth District Basketball Association (EPDBA) is pleased to advise that Matthew Schmechtig has agreed to join the Australian Central Eagles for the 2010 State Basketball League (SBL) season.

Schmechtig is a 185cm guard who in 2009 completed his senior year with Hannibal-La Grange College (Missouri), a Division 1 National Inter-collegiate Athletic Association that competes in the American Midwest Conference.  In his senior year Schmechtig averaged over 16 points per game while shooting 41.5% from beyond the three point line.

Matt originally from Western Australia enjoyed his time playing basketball in the US College system where he felt the best thing was that he got better everyday through the practice that comes with all the training including individual basketball sessions and weight training.   Matt lists amongst his recent career highlights selection in the Western Australia Under 20 Men’s team, First Team All American Midwest Conference selection and as a result of his Philippine descent was eligible and selected in the Philippine National Squad. \

Last year Matt returned briefly to Western Australia and suited up for one game with the Wanneroo Wolves where he scored 15 points against the Perry Lake Hawks in 18 minutes of game time.

Eagles’ Head Coach Damien Chalk said “We are very excited to be able to attract Matt Schmechtig to the Eagles particularly as it will add further depth to the team which is part of the club’s overall goal of achieving sustained success going forward.”

EPDBA Managing Director, Brett Nazzari said “Following on from the re-signing of Tom Jervis, Coach Damien Chalk has been able to sign another young player with US College experience in Matt Schmechtig who has, like Tom, spent time furthering his basketball development in the United States. We look forward to welcoming Matt to the Club.”
