Goldfields Giants to take on ballet dancers

Vertically endowed basketball players do not often perform plies and pirouettes, however graceful they appear on court.

But this Saturday sporting greats Matt Leske and Mark Heron will be going where artistic angels fear to tread.

The brave Goldfields Giants are ready to show off their arabesques and their stork poses.

In addition, they will demonstrate their agility moves, standing long jump skills and formidable dribbling prowess.

They are up against two of the West Australian Ballet’s dancers, competing in a clash designed to test physical fitness and stamina.

Audiences attending the State company’s production of Romeo and Juliet at the Goldfields Arts Centre will watch the contest at 7.30pm.

“It should be a good challenge, I think,” Mr Leske said.

“It’s definitely going to be fun and something different,” Mr Heron added.

Neither of them appeared nervous and they should have the home side’s advantage, with cheerleaders and fans to spur them on to bigger and better achievements.

Giants chairman Graham Crew expressed confidence in his team.

He said they were all “looking forward to being part of this exciting experiment in uniting basketball and ballet”.
