Jones & Suns Female Program Shinning

The Kalamunda Eastern Suns female program have had a high level of success at both WABL and the elite SBL competition in recent times but as a warning to opposing clubs they aren’t about to rest.

Following the WABL program having all 6 teams compete in the finals series during August with all bar one progressing past the first week and the SBL team showing that the new kids on the block tag wasn’t suitable as they have exploded onto the scene in their opening two years.

Whilst taking eventual champion Willetton to three games in the semi finals of the SBL competition in 2009 the Suns are showing that an emphasis on junior development bodes well for both short and long term success.

Proof of this is youngster Adrienne Jones who has had a whirlwind 12 months of basketball and is touted as one of the hottest properties in the WA basketball scene.

Opening with her list of achievements for 2009, Jones debuted for the Suns in the SBL competition, was selected to represent Australia at the inaugural FIBA Oceania U17 Championships in Brisbane, represented WA at the U18 National Championships and was granted a position in the WA ITC program for the third consecutive year.

In her rookie SBL campaign ‘Ajay’ was able to produce a very efficient 5.9pts, 2.7asts and 2.6rebs per outing in just under 18 minutes of action each night, with much anticipation that her best is still to come.

So as a small break was approaching the basketball gods decided there would be no rest in the immediate future as Jones has been offered an AIS scholarship for the remainder of 2009 and saw her debut this past weekend with their WNBL team.

Speaking proudly on both the club and Jones WSBL coach Craig Mansfield said “Ajay’s selection to the AIS is symbolic of the great strides our club is taking. What separates Kalamunda from other WABL programs is our player development focus. Our athletes are not just a resource to be used, we work hard to teach them the game, the skills as well as give them opportunities to try these in live situations. In 2009 alone the women’s WABL program produced the only two Australian female representatives from WA, as well as four Under 18 WA Metro representatives and two reserves.”
