Announcement - New Coaching Director for 2022!

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

Caloundra Basketball is very excited to announce the fantastic news that we have secured our new Coaching Director Mark Somerville.

Mark is currently in a coaching position at University of Sydney in the nationwide University Basketball League competition and also Coaches within the schools Independent Sporting Association (ISA) in the Sydney region. 

Mark has received many accolades in his capacity as Head Coach of St Augustine’s College, Sydney, leading them to 2020, 2019 & 2018 1st Champions and School Shield Champions. As the Head Basketball Coach at Monte Sant' Angelo Mercy College in Sydney, Mark achieved the great result of 2018 Catholic Girls Secondary Schools Plate Champions, 2018 Sydney Catholic Girls Secondary Schools undefeated champions and 2021 Sydney Catholic Girls Secondary Schools Finalists. 

Completing both a Bachelor of Exercise Science and Diploma of Education Mark boasts vast experience in training and rehabilitation of athletes through his education of Exercise Science degree and Athlete Performance Education, in turn allowing many of the athletes that he has trained to reach their potential in performance. Mark states “especially coaching and training at a University level has allowed me to have a greater insight into athletes and how to train them efficiently while using coaching techniques to achieve the desired results intended for both individual athletes and the team.”

Mark welcomes the opportunity to continue with educating basketballers, coaches and parents while passing on in-depth knowledge and understanding of the game of basketball and looks forward to becoming a part of the Caloundra Basketball fabric ensuring all of our players from our grassroots programs such as Little Legends and Super Hoopers through to our Junior club players, Representative players through to our Senior programs are provided with the best skills and development training and are provided with more opportunities to learn and develop as players.

Mark has designed, implemented and delivered skills/development programs at one of Australia’s most recognised universities, University of Sydney and coached players who are representing the University. Mark has been a player selector for multiple universities and private colleges over many years allowing him to have an excellent understanding to differentiate skill levels of players at all levels.

Mark will be leading many Caloundra Basketball initiatives in 2022 such as Caloundra Basketball Academy, Prep for Rep programs, School holiday camps and clinics along with mentoring and educating our club coaches.

The Caloundra Basketball committee is thrilled with the appointment of Mark and are already in planning mode for a spectacular year of basketball for 2022 back at our home courts at Caloundra Indoor Stadium.

Mark states that he looks forward to continuing the success and education of basketball at Caloundra Basketball into the future. 

Mark will commence in the Coaching Director’s position in early January 2022. Keep your eyes peeled for some great holiday programs in the new year.
