After three weeks of action, teams are just starting to sort themselves out in the 2012 SMJFL season. Let’s review the talking points from Round 3:
- Prahran Red remains the only undefeated team in Radiant Under 11 East after their third win for the season. Also in their division, Mordialloc-Braeside kept Beaumaris scoreless in the final quarter to come from nine points down and win by 12, while in an East Brighton derby, the Vampires Red team sucked the life out of Vampires White.
- In Radiant Under 11 North, East Malvern Blue, East Sandringham and East Brighton Vampires have all made impressive undefeated starts to the year.
- Thomas McCarthy was the best for Cheltenham in their ding-dong battle with Waverley Park Gold in Under 12 East. Cheltenham came from 10 points down at three-quarter time to win by four.
- Just one team remains undefeated in Under 12 West and that’s St Kilda City Red.
- A great contest in Under 12 South between St Pauls and Highett, which went down to the wire after remaining close throughout. Connor Chow was superb for St Pauls as they scraped home by a goal, while Sam Boyle played a ripper for Highett.
- What a finish by Ajax Comets in Under 13 Division 2. Six goals in the final quarter to Highett’s two behinds helped overcome an 11-point deficit at the last change. Jeremy and Matthew Bassat were the starring double-act.
- Rebekah Waston was great for Waverley Park in their hard-fought victory over St Bedes/Mentone Tigers in Under 13 Division 3.
- Nice effort by East Sandringham in Under 14 Division 1 to come from three goals down at three-quarter time and pip East Malvern Gold by a point.
- Under 14 Division 3’s Blake Picone bagged five goals in St Kilda City’s second win of the season.
- Super stuff from Dane Heverin: 10 goals for St Bedes/Mentone Tigers in Under 15 Division 2!
- What an absolute cracker between Hampton and St Bedes Mentone Tigers in Under 16 Division 1. The Tigers are unlucky to still be winless this season after leading at every change but going down by four points.
- The dreaded draw reared its ugly head in Under 16 Division 2, with Murrumbeena East Malvern and Waverley Park splitting the points. Meanwhile, Dingley’s Adam Lloyd and St Peters’ James Cooke found themselves in a personal shootout during a match ultimately taken out by the Dingoes, slotting seven goals apiece!
- Goalkicking radars were way off in Under 17 Premier, as East Sandringham kicked themselves out of their clash against Highett with 7.21 (63) to lose by 16 points. Waverley Park were luckier – their 8.23 (71) was enough to overcome Bentleigh by five points. South Melbourne District, Cheltenham and Ormond are left standing as Premier’s only undefeated teams after three rounds.
