Basketballers played very well but played in patches - coach

ROCKHAMPTON import player Justin Watts tore up the court for his squad over the weekend as the Rocky Rockets faced a double-header round against Cairns and Townsville.

In what was a weekend of mixed results for Rockhampton Basketball, the Minecorp Rockets and Frenchville Sports Club Cyclones both won their Queensland Basketball League clashes against Cairns on Friday night before both going down to Townsville Flames on Saturday night.

Despite claiming victory in their first game, Rockets coach Neal Tweedy recognised his outfit's close 80-81 win over Cairns could have been better with consistency.

"We played very well but we played in patches," Tweedy said.

"We need to focus on playing the full four quarters."

Saturday night saw the Rockets go down to Townsville Heat 84-77 and Tweedy was justifiably dissatisfied.

"It was disappointing not to come away with the second game," he said.

"We had our chance to get the two games but we used too much energy catching up in the second game."

Rockets guard and new player Watts had an impressive weekend and Tweedy said his performances in the two games were fantastic.

Rockets key player Stephen Weigh rolled his ankle in the side's clash with Cairns which affected his performance in the Townsville battle while Peni Nasalo suffered a heel injury.

Tweedy said the duo would be recovering this week as the Rockets prepared to play Townsville this weekend.

"We will be refocusing to back it up against Townsville," Tweedy said.

"They are proving to be one of the forces in the competition this season and we need to give them a loss this weekend."

In further QBL results, Rockhampton's Frenchville Sports Club Cyclones tied 35-all with Cairns on Friday night before going down to Townsville 71-70.
