CONGRATULATIONS to the Ipswich Force U12 Girls team who were recently awarded the 2012/13 TEAM of the YEAR!

Below is the story of the team written by Coach Calvin Hegvold:

This hard-working team won the BQJBC Premier League competition for basketball associations in the South-East corner from Noosa to Runaway Bay, defeating Brisbane's South West Metro 40 - 39 in the Grand Final of the 14-week home-and-away competition.

Incredibly, of the 185 teams from U12 to U20 in both boys and girls, the Ipswich Force U12 Girls team finished the season with the best defensive record (points scored against), and also the best points percentage “for-and-against" record.

They then went on to record a rare double, going through the State Championships undefeated, beating the previously undefeated Cairns team 32 - 25 in the State Final.

In all competitions this team played 22 games against the best in the state from 13th October 2012 to 12 April 2013, winning 21 and losing only one game (by 5 points).

This team always represented Ipswich with great pride and were wonderful ambassadors for Ipswich Basketball and an absolute credit to our city. Many people from around the state commented on their great sportsmanship, always shaking hands with players, referees and officials, never questioning decisions, and always treating everyone and the game with respect. Another feature was the composure, patience, maturity and mental toughness shown by a team so young. Although significantly behind in finals, their composure and self-belief never wavered, and they eventually came out on top. Their defensive record also shows the hard work and pride in their defence.

Their individual commitment to improving individually and as a team throughout the season was also a key, and showed in their effort at training.
