THE CAPITALS (10th, 2 – 4 record):

In round 4 of the QBL, your Lady Caps hosted the South West Metro Pirates resulting in an emphatic 103-59 victory; including 70 points from inside the paint (14 off second chance efforts) and 23 from fast breaks. The Pirates had no answer to the Caps extended defensive pressure which resulted in 24 turnovers and 32.8% field goal percentage for the visitors. Capitals guard combination of Madie Woodford and Rachel Mate also successfully restricted dynamic South West guard, Sydney Parsons to just seven (7) second half points; after the explosive guard threatened to continue her early domination of the league scoring title and keep her team in the contest with 20 first half points. Six Caps players hit double figure scoring while the team shot an impressive 52.9% from the field. The Caps were also able to establish themselves on the glass from the outset, and pulled down 53 rebounds to the Pirates 31.

Unfortunately, the Lady Caps were not able to repeat this impressive performance in their away game overtime loss to Ipswich in round 5 last weekend. The Caps, without team Captain Amy Lewis (20.5ppg, 6.8rpg, 3.3apg), took on a full strength Ipswich outfit and started the game positively, taking a 38-24 lead going into the major break. However, an increased physical contest and a 13-26 third quarter by the home team, brought the margin back to just 1 heading into the final quarter. Teams traded throughout the fourth quarter, with Brisbane taking a narrow three-point lead with 11 seconds to go in regulation before Ipswich hit a game tying 3-pt shot with 4 seconds remaining. The Caps were not able to get the shooters-roll on their last second side-out-of-bounds play, which resulted in overtime and the home team taking the game out 74-82. Despite the Lady Caps shooting a handy 43.1% from the field (including 44.4% 3-pt shooting) and holding their opposition to just 32.6% from the field and 16.7% from behind the arc, Ipswich were able to get to the foul-line 35 times – connecting on 23 – off Brisbane’s 28 team fouls. Comparatively, Brisbane could only get to the foul-line on 12 occasions.

ROUND 6 v MACKAY METEORS (5th, 3-2 record):

In the 2015 Season, the Meteors finished 3rd in the regular season with a 12 – 5 record. Prior to last season, Mackay held the QBL Championship title for three consecutive years (2012, 13 & 14). So far this season, Mackay averages 79.8ppg for and holds opposition teams to just 69.5ppg. The Meteors 42.5% from the field (40.35% 3-pt shooting) is very solid and hard to contain. Interestingly, when they have lost this season, Mackay have shot a combined 34.4% from the field. Currently, Brisbane average 75.3ppg and have held their opposition to just 69.5ppg despite the four losses, restricting opposition teams to just 32.7% field goal shooting while shooting 48.4% themselves in the last two contests. Round 6 sees Mackay tackle a three game road trip, taking on both Sunshine Coast teams before facing off against the Caps on Sunday.

Series Record: The Lady Caps have played Mackay on six (6) occasions since 2012 and trail the series 0 - 6.

Last Meeting: The Lady Caps last played the Meteors on the road in the final game of 2015 (Rd 15) falling 55-84.

GETTING TO KNOW ASHTON:

After playing for teams in three states and one territory, SEABL veteran and dynamic playmaker Aston Eaton wanted a new challenge and chose the QBL and the Brisbane Capitals to continue her senior career. Ashton’s impact with the Lady Caps has been immediate, and after six rounds, she has established herself as a major contributor to the team; including: second in the team from long range (38.5%), third in rebounds (5.0rpg), fourth in both points and assists (9.7ppg and 2.3apg), fifth in field goals (41.5%) and a team leading 2.7 steals per game. Since the Northern road trip, the talented scoring guard has increased her points production average to 12.5ppg in just over 20mins playing time per game, on 58.8% field goal shooting, including 42.8% from behind the arc. With a love for playing in big games and the 2016 season still young, Eaton is eager to lead Brisbane against some of the leagues power houses, including Mackay this Sunday.

SBL Women: The Brisbane Capitals SBL Women’s team (5th, 2 – 1 record) are playing away this weekend, visiting the Logan Thunder (2nd, 4 – 0 record) at the Mt Warren Sports Centre. Tipoff is scheduled for 2pm.
