Veal Parts Ways with Capitals

Kristen Veal has chosen not to continue as head coach of the Brisbane Capitals women’s QBL team effective immediately.

Veal met with Association officials a week ago citing a full schedule in 2014 as the main reason she is regretfully withdrawing from her third year as Capitals head coach.

Currently Veal is captaining the Logan Thunder in the backend of the 2013/14 WNBL season, midway through last year she was recalled into the Australian Opals squad and an increased workload is expected this year in preparations for the upcoming World Championships of Basketball, plus a significant increase in work demands relating to studies all adds up to a very full 2014 schedule.

The Brisbane Capitals women’s program thrived under the tutelage and leadership Veal always displayed while representing the Association both on and off the court. Veal’s overall plan has gradually morphed the women’s program from cellar dwellers to Championship contenders culminating in last season’s FINAL FOUR semi-final appearance in Mackay.

“My life this coming year will be pretty hectic,” Veal said.

“Unfortunately, there is no way I could give the program the time and effort it needs and deserves to continue progressing up the QBL ladder and challenge for a Championship and I don’t think that it’s fair for me to continue.”

“I love the direction the program is going, I’m thankful for the opportunities and who knows, maybe one day I’ll be back,” she concluded.

The Brisbane Capitals will look to make an announcement in the near future regarding the head and assistant coach appointments and begin pre-season trials and training very soon.
