THRILLER TO FINISH REGULAR SEASON

McDonald's Mackay Stadium was buzzing on Saturday night as the regular season came to close for our local teams against the Sunshine coast Phoenix.

The Global Product Search Meteorettes took to the floor looking to take some momentum into the playoffs in two weeks time and got off to a decent start taking a 5 point lead at quarter time. The second quarter proved pivotal as the Meteorettes put there foot on the throttle to take a 20 point half time lead to the change rooms. The second half was a fairly even affair with the locals running out comfortable 96-75 winners.

Nadeen Payne proved unstoppable with 31 points and 13 rebounds, Jillian Haughton had 17 points and 11 assists and Tami Willey chipped in with 16 points. Jacqui Zelenka on restricted minutes due to injury had 8 points and 6 rebounds and youngster Wallis Randell impressed with a career high 10 points.

The McDonald's Meteors took to the floor looking to arrest a 2 game losing skid against the Phoenix who were full of confidence coming off a win in Rockhampton the previous night. The first half proved to be nip and tuck both ways with the Meteors holding a slender2 point lead at the main interval. The Phoenix came out firing in the third term to arrest the lead by 4 at the last break. The fourth term proved to be a battle with both teams having momentum at times and the Meteors having to withstand a last second shot attempt to force the game to overtime.

The 5 minute period proved to be some of the most exciting of the season as a fever pitch "Crater" lifted the McDonald's Meteors to new heights, literally, as TJ Diop and Lucas Walker brought the house down with some thunderous dunks. Captain Chris Cedar caught fire from deep and it was all over as the locals finished out 115-104 winners.

Walker finished with 25 points and 10 boards, Cam Tragardh had 23 points, TJ Diop continues to come back from injury with an impressive 22 points and Chris Cedar had 22 points, 8 rebounds and 7 assists. Shaun Bruce finished the game with 15 points and an amazing 21 assists and special mention to Phoenix guard Breland Hogan who had a game high 41 points.

Both local teams have now qualified for home Quarter finals on Saturday the 12 August at McDonald's Mackay Stadium with their opponents yet to be determined. LETS FILL THE CRATER!!!
