QBL WINS IN CAIRNS

It was a successful night in Cairns at the Fish Tank for the Mackay QBL sides on Friday.

The evening began with the understrength Global Product Search Meteorettes taking on the Dolphins in a return match up from two weeks ago where the Mackay girls got up by 2 points at home.

Cairns started the game well leading by 5 at quarter time before the Meteorettes got rolling in the second stanza to take a 8 point break into the locker room at half time.

The game was tight in third with Cairns reducing the margin to 3 before the Mackay girls stepped on the gas late in the third to take a 16 point lead into the last break. The Global Product Search Meteorettes finished the game in style to walk away with a 93-69 road win. Nadeen Payne showed her class with a 29 point, 9 rebs and 6 assist night. Tami Willey had 23 points and 12 rebs and captain Jillian Haughton filled the stat sheets with an 11 point, 7 reb, 11 assist night.

Following on from the ladies the McDonald's Meteors took on the defending champion Marlins in a venue that has proved difficult to win at for Mackay.

From the outset the game had high intensity and quality from both sides. The Marlins with a 4 point quarter time advantage which the Meteors levelled in term two with the sides heading to the sheds 52 all.

The third term proved to be a tough one for the McDonald's Meteors as Cairns took a 79-70 lead at the last change. Cairns extended their lead out to 14 with 8 minutes left before the Mackay lads came home with a force to take a 2 point lead with 1.16 left through a Shaun Bruce trifecta.

The Marlins hit back with the next 5 points before Shaun Bruce coolly knocked down another 3 with 19 seconds left to tie the game. The Marlins had a chance to win the game bad Brad Rasmussen came up with a big defensive play on Marlins Jarrod Weeks to send the game to overtime.

The Meteors came out firing in the extra period scoring the first 9 points without reply and eventually run out 115-108 winners to quieten the fish tank to a whisper.

Shaun Bruce had 29 points to lead the Meteors in scoring and Cam Tragardh added 21 points and 10 rebs against his former side. Lucas Walker had an immense game having returned from China with The NBL All Australia Team, pocketing 22 points, 10 rebounds and 11 assists in a triple double performance. Brad Rasmussen hit some timely shots in a 12 point, 7 rebound effort and TJ Diop had a 10 point, 9 rebound effort in his return from injury.

Both teams head to Townsville today to play again tonight to finish off the road trip.
