Day 1 - QUEST IN MACKAY Australia Day Carnival
The first day of the four day QUEST IN MACKAY 2017 Australia Day Carnival had a thrilling finale in the Division 1 Mens game between Souths and the visiting Pirates.
Both teams showed their class in the warm conditions at the McDonald’s Mackay Stadium with Souths getting over the line by 4 points, with a solid team effort. The Pirates were lead by former McDonald’s Mackay Meteor MVP Deba George who couldn’t miss from the perimeter, clocking up an impressive 40 points, in the nail bitter.
The highlight on the Women’s side of the draw was from the Under 16 Mackay Meteorettes, and even thought they were undersized compered to their older opponents, showed the benefit of hours of training together in preparation for the upcoming State Championships.
The 25 competitive games that were played today will be followed up tomorrow with 26 games, with the first tip off at 2pm.
The games of interest tomorrow will include the return of ex Mackay Basketball favourite sons Joel Khalu and Greg Vanderjagt, who are playing for Hoops Dreaming, at 4pm and 7pm.
As well as the return to the court of the Mackay Fire, that includes a number of players that competed at the recent Special Olympics, at 5pm.
