Cedar & Haughton Take MVP Honours

McDonald's Meteors swingman Michael Cedar and Global Product Search Meteorettes point guard Jillian Haughton were recognised last night, winning the club's Most Valuable Player Awards at the Mackay QBL Presentation Event in front of 230 guests at the Harrup Park Country Club.

It was fitting reward for the pair who have both had tremendous 2012 Queensland Basketball League home & away campaigns.

In his first season for the McDonald's Meteors, Cedar finished the 16-game regular season averaging a team best 17.8 points per game.  Along with his scoring output, Cedar was also second in the team in rebounds (6.6rpg) and assists (4.4apg).

For the women, Haughton had a sensational all-around season for Global Product Search Meteorettes averaging 13.8 points, 6.1 rebounds and 5.8 assists per game to claim her first ever club M.V.P award.

Cedar was honoured about receiving the McDonald's Meteors M.V.P trophy.

"We have a great group of players and to be recognised as the MVP of our team is definitely an honour," Cedar said.

"It's been a fun season, the guys are great and I am really enjoying my time playing here in Mackay."

"The club is very professional in what they do and the support we have from the community is fantastic," Cedar added.

In other awards, McDonald's Meteors team captain Matt Gange took out his second straight Best Defensive Player Award.  American Braydon Hobbs was named Players' Player while talented young local Luke Harvey won the teams Coaches Award.

For the women it was a night to remember for Jillian Haughton, who along with her M.V.P trophy, also collected the Players' Player award.  Rylie Smith received the Coaches Award, while Louella Tomlinson was named Best Defensive Player for her efforts which included a QBL best, 4.8 blocks per game

McDonald's Meteors veteran Bradley Rasmussen won the club's 'Commitment to Community' award and team manager Des Burgess was named Club Person of the Year for his outstanding volunteer services.

Mackay Basketball General Manager Joel Khalu said the event a great way to celebrate the achievements of everybody involved before heading into the QBL Quarter Finals this weekend.

"Both of our QBL teams have had outstanding home & away seasons," Khalu said.

"For the Meteors to finish second overall and for the Meteorettes to finish fourth, definitely shows that our program is doing the right things."

"We commend the accomplishments of both playing groups and everybody involved for their efforts in the QBL regular season."

"We are hopeful that the success of the Presentation Event will help us build momentum as we move ahead into the QBL Quarter Finals this Saturday," Khalu added.

The McDonald's Meteors will face the Cairns Marlins at home in their QBL Quarter Final while the Global Product Search Meteorettes will head back to Rockhampton to take on the Cyclones.
