SBL Round 15

Mandurah Magic men’s team have moved into sixth position on the State Basketball League ladder after a convincing 113-92 victory over the Goldfields Giants.

Mandurah secured their victory by quarter time after opening up a 26 point lead by the first break. All cylinders were firing early for the Magic as Taylor Mullenax controlled the inside, while Aaron Trahair took up his usual place outside the three point line.

Taylor Land also started strong for the Magic as he pushed the tempo up the court, while pressuring the Giants into numerous turnovers.

By half time, the Magic had nine out of their 12 players on the scoreboard, with Mullenax and Trahair both in double figures. The Magic also forced the Giants into 14 first half turnovers resulting in 17 points added to the scoreboard.

The third quarter was slightly messy for the Magic as their shooting percentages dropped, but were only outscored by three points as they continued to dominate the rebounding count and eliminating any second chance opportunities the Giants may have had.

The final quarter was much freer flowing, which also saw the game become much more physical. An unsportsmanlike foul on Giants big man Dwayne Radcliffe and his ensuing altercation with the Magic players resulted in him being ejected from the game. This only added salt to the Giants’ already deep wound as Mandurah coasted to a comfortable victory.

The Magic led the Giants in shooting percentages, as well as each statistical category. Taylor Mullenax led the scoring for the Magic with a game high 36 points, as well as adding ten rebounds. Aaron Trahair finished with 17 points, connecting on four three pointers. Taylor Land also had a solid night finishing with 11 points, eight rebounds and eight assists.

Russell Hurst was the Giants leading scorer with 20 points, while Kyle Keirnan and Matthew Leske each had 16 points.

The victory was the Magic’s eleventh of the season and sees them move into sixth place on the table. The Giants season continues to linger in second place on the table with just five wins against their name.

The Magic continue their push for a top four position this weekend as they travel to Willetton to face the seventh place Willetton Tigers.
