SBL Round 9

A solid weekend of basketball by both the men’s and women’s teams has seen the Mandurah Magic make their move on the State Basketball League ladder.

Two wins from two games for the women has seen them press their claim for a top eight position as the move into ninth spot, while the men move into fourth position.

Friday night saw both Magic teams head to Morley to take on the East Perth Eagles. The Magic women started their game off strong against the league’s bottom placed side. Coming into the game after releasing import Brittany Ward during the week, the Magic has to rely on star veteran Casey Mihovilovich to fill in at point guard.

The Magic were able to take advantage of an inexperienced Eagles team, and dominated on both ends of the floor. Bree Klasztorny was the standout for the Magic as she finished the game with 19 points and 13 rebounds. Despite fouling out during the fourth quarter, Mihovilovich ended her night with 12 points and 13 rebounds.

The Magic dominated the Eagles in every statistical category as they ran out winners with a 61-42 score line.

The Magic men entered their match-up against the Eagles with a score to settle after being knocked out of the 2012 playoffs by the very side they were about to face.

In what was promising to be a physical match-up, the Magic bolted out of the gates early as they looked to assert their authority. Taylor Mullenax has the early advantage over his opponent Tom Jervis, while Taylor Land and captain Ben Caporn ran the floor well.

In what was a see-sawing contest, the lead changed numerous times during the game as both teams looked for their opportunity to seize control. The game was decided in the final moments as a missed shot clock violation call allowed the Eagles to take the lead in the final moments. Caporn was unable to get a final shot away despite appearing to be fouled in the process.

The 87-84 victory to the Eagles halted Mandurah’s league-best six game winning streak. Mullenax was the game’s high scorer with 24 points, while Land finished with 19 points. Caporn also had a solid outing finishing with 17 points.

The Magic returned to their home floor on Saturday night to take on a struggling Stirling Senators outfit desperate to get their season back on track.

However they would leave Mandurah empty handed as the Magic racked up two victories on the same night for the first time this season.

The Magic women restricted the Senators to only two points in the first quarter and despite a furious comeback, led from start to finish recording a 56-53 victory and move into ninth position on the league ladder.

Youngster Ashlee Sidebottom was the standout for the Magic as she finished with 16 points and eight rebounds. Rachel Halleen and Casey Mihovilovich each finished with 11 points as the Magic shot 48% from the field compared to the Senators 27%.
