FLAMES SECURE GARBIN FOR 2018

FLAMES SECURE FIRE STAR FOR 2018

The Townsville Flames are excited to announce the re-signing of the QBL’s premier frontcourt player, Darcee Garbin for 2018. Garbin will remain in Townsville after being hotly pursued by multiple clubs following a standout 2017 year in which she was named to the QBL’s all-star 5 and also named Flames MVP. In 2017 Darcee averaged 23.4ppg, 10.2rpg & 2.9apg while shooting at 48% from the field and 81% from the free throw line, a statline unmatched by any frontcourt player in the QBL.

Garbin is currently enjoying another solid season for the Townsville Fire, averaging 7.3ppg and 4rpg playing alongside WNBL super stars Suzy Batkovic and Cayla George in the Fire frontcourt.

Townsville Basketball General Manager, Greg Vanderjagt expressed his excitement at the retention of Garbin ahead of the upcoming season.

“Darcee proved in 2017 that she is the premier frontcourt player in the QBL and one of the top players in the whole league. She’s grown immensely as a player over the past twelve months and the work she has done on the court and in the weight room will make her a force to be reckoned with in 2018”.

“We identified Darcee as our number one target at the end of last season and securing her signing prior to Christmas gives us a marquee piece to build the rest of the roster around. I know Mike (St-Maurice) is working hard in the background to secure players in the key positions we need to contend in 2018”.

Garbin shared her pleasure about staying in Townsville during the WNBL offseason for a second straight year, citing the professionalism around the program as setting Townsville apart from other suitors.

“Townsville Basketball have proven this year that they are committed to my development as an athlete. The support and services around this program I won’t find anywhere else in the QBL. We came so close last year to being in a championship series and it’s a goal to get back to the playoffs in 2018 and play until the last weekend of August”.

“I’m looking forward to having some down time after a big WNBL season, then getting straight back into it with the Flames girls, ready for the start of the QBL season”.

The Flames will start their 2018 pre-season in early February in preparation for the QBL season in April.
