Basketball Queensland's weekly round-up
Butler at Australian Opals Camp
Congratulations to Basketball Queensland State Performance Manager – Queensland North, Scott Butler, who is currently in camp with the Australian Opals squad as Technical Assistant Coach. The Opals are in Dandenong and Ballarat this week preparing for their FIBA Oceania championships qualifier, which will be played out against New Zealand in August, prior to the 2014 FIBA World Cup in Spain. Butler joins the camp alongside Opals Head Coach Brendan Joyce, former Basketball Queensland State Performance Manager – Queensland South. Queensland Gems through to U19 World Championship Quarter Finals
Queensland’s Alicia Froling (Townsville/Townsville Fire) and Tiana Mangakahia (Southern Districts/Townsville Fire) are through to the Quarter Finals with the Australian Gems team at the FIBA Under 19 World Championship for Women in Lithuania. The Gems defeated Serbia 89-53 to move through to the finals, and will take on China at 1am on Saturday 27 July, AEST.
Coaches Experience Tour
Basketball Queensland and Npire are holding a Coaches Experience Tour in the United States from 11-26 October, 2013. The tour will be hosted by Natalie Porter and Gannon Baker, and will include visits to selected colleges with participants learning from some of the top basketball coaches in the world. Coaching Courses
Coaching courses were held over the weekend, with a Level One in Brisbane facilitated by Scott Butler, State Performance Manager – Queensland South, and Level Two in Townsville facilitated by Leonard King, High Performance Director. Both sessions had great attendance and strong positive feedback, with Level Two attendees gaining some insight into offense techniques from Townsville Crocodiles Head Coach, Shawn Dennis. Association Services: Current Grants Available
Gambling Community Benefit Fund
Provides one-off grants of up to $35,000 to Queensland-based not-for-profit community groups. Applications close 31 August 2013.
Jupiter’s Casino Community Benefit Fund:
Grants of up to $150,000 are available for capital expenditure/fixed assets, pilot projects, community education/training, and community workshops. Applications close 31 August 2013.
