Froling Twins score dream AIS Scholarship

WITH too much basketball being nowhere near enough, the Froling twins have found their idea of hoops heaven.

Townsville prodigies Alicia and Keely next month will begin to live and breathe the sport they love when they move to Canberra full-time after recently accepting one-year scholarships to the Australian Institute of Sport.

Not even the thought of leaving home at just 16 deters them.

"It's tough to leave your friends and family, but then from the basketball side of it, it's a definite, you just have to go," Townsville Fire development player Keely said.

"It's basketball 24 hours a day, which is pretty much what we do anyway, but this will be even better."

Alicia said: "We're in that high-performance environment where we'll do weights and obviously get stronger, so it will be good for our games all round and hopefully mean that we come back good players."

The basketball world appears to be at the feet the talented Year 11 duo, who regularly play for Australian junior teams.

Alicia, a 198cm small forward/power forward, and Keely, a 196cm shooting guard/small forward, also have numerous United States colleges hoping to lure them overseas after they finish school.

The twins' father, Shane, himself a former professional, said he expected the experience to lift the girls to a new level.

"The AIS will have three full-time coaches ready to develop their individual skills," the ex-Townsville NBL player said.

"They will be playing 30 or 40 games as well as having two trainings a day for the whole year ... so there's a lot more focus on individual development, which will be hugely beneficial."

An overseas tour as well as playing a Japan touring team is also on the horizon for Alicia and Keely at the AIS.

But they are also daring to dream ever bigger.

While two years under age, the pair hope to use their experience at the institute to help them push for places in the Australia under-19 team competing at next year's FIBA World Championships.
