Team Philippines Pyro and Titans along with Team Hong Kong Crazy Dragons each took home two gold medals on day 2 of the competition which featured the 300m distance. The Philippines got off to a blistering start in the Open Mix 22 persons Big Boat finals race as they crossed the finish line 1.14 seconds in front of the Crazy Dragons. Third place was awarded to Team Guam’s Acha’gigu who edged out Haggan by 21/100 of a second in the consolation round.
The Crazy Dragons with their youth filled roster came back in the Men’s 12 persons race to slip by Haggan in a hotly contested battle that saw the Hong Kong team cross 26/100th ahead of Haggan. Acha’gigu also slipped by the Philippines team by 28/100th for the bronze. In the women’s division, the Philippines took the division title beating Taiwan Hash Dragon Boat Club while Haggan claimed the bronze from Hong Kong.
The final championship race of the day was the Open Mixed 12-person boat between Philippines and Hong Kong. After a neck and neck race throughout the 300m course, Hong Kong snuck into the finish line outmaneuvering the Philippine team by 27/100th for the gold. In the battle between the two Guam teams, Haggan displayed their might beating Acha-gigu for the bronze.
After 30 races and over five hours of action packed dragon boat races along Tumon Bay, the Guam Thanksgiving Dragon Boat Festival concluded with the presentation of awards during the closing ceremony. Trophies and medals were awarded to the top three finishers in each race for both the 500m and 300m races along the scenic backdrop of beautiful Tumon Bay. Open Mix Big Boat (22 persons), Open Men Small Boat (12 men), Open Women Small Boat (12 women) and Open Mix small boat (12 persons) races were contested over the weekend at the Matapang Beach Park.
According to Race Coordinator Ronald Ruiz, this event was a great learning experience for everyone. Guam ACES Chairman Bernie Lirag agreed and stated that the next event will hopefully be more successful than this inaugural race. Representatives from the participating teams were already talking with Guam ACES and GDBF officials about bringing their U23 teams to Guam for another event.
