It took a total of five races for the Guam Fire Department Team to lay claim to the 9/11 First Responders Commemorative Dragon Boat Race held on Sunday, September 8, 2013 at the Matapang Beach Park. After being edged by Guam Customs and Quarantine team in the previous race by a dragon’s nose, Guam Fire secured the title by half a boat’s length in the rematch. The fire team overcame heat exhaustion and back to back races to outlast the feisty team from Guam Customs and Quarantine.
Third place was secured by Andersen Air Force Base Fire Department A beating out their B team counterpart in the semi-final race. The fourteen races were contested by teams from the Guam Fire Department, Guam Customs and Quarantine Department, Andersen Air Force Fire Department, Andersen Civil Engineers and the Navy Fire Department.
The race was coordinated by Guam Dragon Boat Federation National Team Coach Ronald Ruiz along with the Haggan Outrigger Canoe Club in commemoration of 9/11.
