COMETS 12 MEN AND 18 MEN WIN STATE CHAMPIONSHIPS

The drought is officially over for the Sydney Comets junior men's program with the 12 Men & 18 Men winning the association's first boys state titles since 2001.

Only a week earlier winning the metro championship this result caps off a highly successful season for both teams.

For the 12 Men the state title campaign began with a resounding victory over Illawara 108-32 on Friday night. In the two games Saturday wins over Coffs Harbour 84-17 and Sutherland 74-46 set up a semi final showdown with the North Sydney Bears. With only four points separating the two teams at halftime the Comets boys went on to win 46-37 in a hard fought tussle.

The Grand Final saw a rematch of the Metro Championship. Close at the half it was the boys blistering third quarter outscoring the Hornets 22-4 which set up the win. Final score Sydney Comets 69 Hills Hornets 39. Comet Ethan Bateman was awarded the MVP of the Grand Final.

North Sydney played host to the Under 16 & Under 18 State Championships and for the 18 boys the tournament began with the Comets going down to the Gosford Rebels 62-48. Bouncing back from the first round loss the boys responded with wins over Albury 86-54 and Manly Sea Eagles 57-48. In the Semi Final Sydney Comets defeated Bankstown Bruins 67-60.

In the final game of the Under 18 State Championships saw the Comets boys take on Penrith Panthers a team they hadn't beaten all season. The Comets boys got out to an early lead and maintained its lead throughout to record a 71-66 victory and take home the title. Clae Martin of the Sydney Comets was awarded with the MVP of the game.
