After what has been a great season, Kawana Park JAFC have been recognised for their efforts by being named as the Maroochy RSL Club AFL Sunshine Coast Juniors 2010 Club of the Year.
In front of over 300 people at the AFL Sunshine Coast Juniors Presentation night at Maroochy RSL Club on Tuesday night, Eagles Vice President Deb Linton (pictured) accepted the award on the clubs behalf.
The ‘Club of the Year’ title is awarded to a club based on a variety of factors including meeting attendance (AGM, Conference, Delegates Meetings and other forums), along with their general on field sportsmanship, game development within their community, marketing of themselves, Footyweb compliance and above all administration and communication with the League.
2010 has been a successful year on the field for the Eagles, highlighted with the initiation of a fantastic “in season” Auskick program for 5 & 6 year olds, run by clubman Paul Menti who was also recognised for his efforts with the 2010 AFL Auskick Coordinator of the Year award and their Under 14 team qualifying for the Grand Final.
Off the field, the club also achieved great success through a Sport & Recreation Queensland Infrastructure Grant to develop full ground lighting at their home ground at Kawana Waters State College. Much of the ground work for this grant completed by President Paul Meehan and his wife Carmel.
The club was presented with a Club of the Year plaque, which will no doubt hang proudly in the ‘Shed’ at the college alongside their 2007 Club of the Year Award. The Eagles will also receive a 2011 Season Ticket Standard Family Membership, proudly donated by the Brisbane Lions Football Club.
Pomona AFC was named as the runner up in 2010, and received this title with almost as much excitement and enthusiasm as they did in 2009 when they won the award. The club has had a very successful season on the field, with all three youth teams making their respective grand finals. Led by Wayne Mahony and Jessica Hooyer (among others) off the field, the club has maintained the highest Footyweb standard of all 10 clubs throughout the season (well done Jess), and have created a great match day environment for visiting clubs.
New kids on the block North Shore were awarded third place in the award after a start up season that saw the club field a team in all five age groups as a result of some great recruiting, particularly in bringing new kids to the game. Well done to Warren Selvage and his band of helpers and we look forward to watching this fledgling club continue to grow in the years to come.
So congratulations to Kawana Park, Pomona and North Shore clubs on their outstanding seasons, along with all of our other clubs who have worked hard to ensure 2010 was another successful season of Junior AFL on the Sunshine Coast.
