Queensland posted a magnificent 16-point win over Vic Metro to claim third place at the Australian U15 Schoolboys carnival at Maroochydore today.
Aspley centreman James Ives, son of Grogan Medalist Peter Ives was best a-field as the Maroons turned a blistering start into a 9-5 (59) to 6-7 (43) victory in the play-off for third.
They jumped the visitors five goals to one in the first term and withstood a Vic Metro rally in the second before a pretty even second half.
Mt.Gravatt centre half forward Clay Cameron, like Ives a member of the Australia Post Queensland Young Scorpions side at the recent NAB Australian U16 Championships in Sydney, was another standout performer with two goals.
Full forward Matthew Edwards, from Mt.Gravatt, kicked five goals to provide a winning focal point for the Maroons, while former Mt.Gravatt midfielder Tyrone Brimble, in the process of returning to AFL football after two years in the rugby codes, also was among Queensland’s best with Bundaberg ruckman Jock Oates and Sherwood back pocket Jonte Henley, Mackay centre half back Tyler Jones and Southport midfielder Tom Davidson.
The win, believed to be the first by Queensland over Vic Metro at this level in 20 years, gave the ‘home’ side a 3-2 win/loss record in a carnival that ran from last Sunday until today.
They had earlier beaten ACT by 15 goals and beaten WA (2) by 12 goals before losing to WA (1) by 15 points and then to Vic Country by eight goals in the preliminary final.
Ives, Cameron, Oates and Brimble were chosen in the All-Australian side.
