At least this report is of a dry wash up, with grounds improving in firmness we look positively to fast grounds over the last 3 months of season 2009. I say all of that with thunder and lightning gracing the skies outside and down it comes.
A Super Sunday of football was experienced last weekend in our Maroochy RSL Club AFL Sunshine Coast Juniors youth competitions. A mega day was put in front of the crowd at Maroochydore Junior footy clubs home venue, Fishermans Road, some 10 games of action were hosted at the home of Sunshine Coast AFL. Other venues to offer the best weekend entertainment in town were Noosa, Caloundra, Nambour & Hinterland and Coolum.
All our littlies footy was played on Friday night leaving big sleep in opportunities for the 8’s and 10’ers come Sunday; Friday night games at Noosa, Glasshouse and Caloundra were played in cooling conditions with a rising full moon to enhance the scene. From all reports these players are developing their skills fantastically at this participation modified rules levels and at the half way mark of their season all are looking the goods for lengthy AFL careers.
At Noosa on Sunday a couple of games preceded an under 18 battle, with Noosa Gold in the under 12’s div 3 and Noosa Red in the 16’s accounting for the visiting Lions teams of Glasshouse Hinterland. Quite a shock the margin in the 12’s div 3 as the young Lions got a football lesson after on most previous occasions being most competitive – coach Phill thinking the Terry Wallace Richmond coaching curse had now come his way with Terry’s departure - Phill a fanatical Tigers supporter.
The Combo’s in Glasshouse and Pomona under 16’s gave it all to Noosa Red in the first half but tiring legs catching up with them as the game rolled to completion.
Down the coastal dunes Coolum Beach hosted 3 games and whilst all didn’t go the home teams’ way a great day was had, good to see the fields have dried well at the High School.
The Coolum Beach div 2 under 12 team is back on track after a couple of tougher weeks against the strength of teams recently returning from division 1, cats big and small that is in Glasshouse Hinterland Lions and Gympie Cats. This win gives the Breakers of Coolum Beach a games breathing space on top of the div 2 12’s ladder, no doubt Breakers coach O’Dwyer will be breathing a little easier now.
Even thought the scoreboard doesn’t quite indicate such, the Coolum 14’s took it right up to ladder leaders Noosa Red in their division two game.
Speaking of a field that required a good drying period after our recent very wet weeks, the old “woods” field is now on the mend. Yesterday the Nambour & Hinterland Blues hosted three junior games with an AFLQ 18’s game to finish off proceedings for the locals.
In the under 12 div 1 game the Blue Tiger of Noosa accounted for a gallant Nambour & Hinterland Blues team giving themselves a games break after the top Roo beat the Eagles of this competition. It is still a tight group of three teams in this competition in the Blues, Eagles and Tigers of Blue as they still look to chase down the top side.
The day didn’t get better for the locals as their under 14 team got a football lesson from division 1 ladder leaders Noosa Blue, and this Noosa Tiger team is certainly the yard stick of this competition.
Unfortunately in the 16’s the Cats of Gympie roamed into town with limited numbers and a forfeit ensued but the right thing done for all those boys chasing their weekly fix in a game of footy – a scratch match was played.
In the deep coastal south, Caloundra had three games to host and whilst things were tough going against their hinterland neighbour in Glasshouse, enjoyment was there for all these developing under 12 and 14 footballers.
The match of the round came by way of the under 16 game at North Street with the Panthers of Caloundra hosting Kawana Park Eagles. The Panthers went in with a renewed game plan and a team that is beginning to play with some greater consistency, resulting in a hard fought contest with the locals getting the chocolates albeit by only one straight kick in a game many of the scribes feel could have gone either way. This Panther win has now pushed them ahead of the Eagles on the ladder and will leave the race for that all important second spot a battle royal.
As mentioned at Fishermans Road it was field upon field of Roos, mobs roaming everywhere. All Maroochydore youth teams scheduled at home on the one day is a rare sight, they gathered mixed results but a great in season match day opportunity to come together and celebrate junior Roo AFL.
The match of the day at Roo Park, Fishermans Road was the division 1 under 12 game Maroochydore Roo’s v Kawana Park. The Eagles were out on the hunt and they had the Roos in their sights, firing one more scoring shot ended up leaving the Eagles four points short. Still from this result the Meehan driven Eagles will be electrically charged next time they face off against the top sided Roos.
Next round we see some Friday night youth footy at Fishermans Road with three games and two at Nambour & Hinterlands “woods” venue – pack the beanie. AFL Junior footy action this Sunday is nearly at every street corner of the coast, Cool Cats are heating up these winter nights, Meridan State College welcomes a couple of under 8 games whilst footy is huge at Pomona, Coolum and Caloundra with LMP action warming up the participation hearts of youth footy thereafter, whilst Gympie and Nambour & Hinterland have some big days of youth action.
So champions, continue to train hard this week, as with two rounds to the two week school holiday break there are plenty of positives to gain before school’s out.
