Round 7 of the Maroochy RSL Club AFL Sunshine Coast Juniors season got underway on Friday night and continued on Sunday under grey skies and on waterlogged fields and although they were difficult conditions there were many close and well fought games.
A top of the table clash was the crowd favourite in the under 12’s div 1 played at Fishermans between Maroochydore Roos and Noosa Blue. The end result saw the home team come away with a 37 point win, this now leaving the Roos hopping to an eight point gap. The Blue Tiger now back in the pack with three teams locked away on 5 wins from 7 starts. Caloundra again went close, going down by less than two goals; these Panthers continue to build confidence in a developing game plan.
In the division 2 12s, Coolum Beach got back on the winners board after facing a returning Lions outfit last week and tasting their first loss for season 09. Gympie away from home appear not to be the strength they are on their own kitty litter dung hill. The Lions of Glasshouse Hinterland were solid winners proving to all the difficulty of grading some teams, dammed if you do and dammed if you don’t.
The recently formed Coolum Beach Breakers div 3 12’s team tasted victory at their second start; this team is powered by girl power with five young girls taking to AFL in the past fortnight within this team. Third placed Nambour & Hinterland Blues defeated the Lions in a match starting too early for boys to be fully awake on a Sunday morning (8.30am) and mud that would have made legs very weary at days end.
One of the games of the round was played out at the “woods” on Friday evening, with the Blues hosting the Green hopping Roos of Maroochydore and what a cracker of a game we had in very heavy conditions. The ball was fought for with amazing passion from all concerned and defence the call of the day in these trenches, finally the siren sounded for some weary boys with the spoils going to the green Roo by a solitary point. The victors who last start drew with Nambour & Hinterland Blues joyfully sang the club song then proceeded on mass to head to the deep end and do swan dives into some glorious “woods” mud. Boys will be boys!
At the top end of the table in the div 1 14s we had two teams face up whom had the perfect record to date with 6 starts for 6 wins, but today pending a draw we were to see one team take a clear top spot. That team on this Sunday was the Noosa Tigers by 9 goals in a game that promised more, certainly a few injuries haven’t helped the Roos and some of these players should be returning in coming weeks.
Caloundra 14’s div 1 team did themselves a big favour getting the four points against a Kawana Park team without the high fella Lincoln. This win by 7 plus goals has kept the Panthers of Caloundra well in the hunt as only a draw to those Green Roos separates them from a fourth spot.
In the Under 14 division 2 competition, the final siren couldn’t separate Coolum Beach and Maroochydore White who both finished in a draw with 36 points each, a few weeks back these ever improving Breakers went down by 7 goals. The relegated teams of Pomona and Glasshouse had strong wins opening up potential challengers to the top teams of this competition, whilst top team Caloundra got the points against the travelling Cats.
The 16’s of Pool A saw a very dour struggle early Sunday afternoon out at the woods but the class and experience of the little fellas at Caloundra got their team home, the Eagles short a few top line players. This has the Eagles now with their two losses to date coming over the past two starts, the Eagles will be back to the drawing board this week on the track as they face a Maroochydore team also keen for the points after a few tough weeks.
The last game on a busy woods card for Sunday was the home team hosting the southern Hinterlanders of Lions, a cracker of a game ensued with an inaccurate 6 points by the Lions being the final margin. On forfeit Noosa Red got the points from Gympie, but a game still transpired the Cats rocking into Noosa town with 12 players a scratchy resulted – well done to all.
The forecast for the rest of the week looks average, but mainly fine as we hope for conditions that will dry out some of our sodden playing surfaces. Round 8 of the Maroochy RSL AFL Sunshine Coast Juniors competition sees seven of our nine affiliated clubs hosting games from Gympie in the north and south to Caloundra. LMP action at Caloundra and Glasshouse for the southerners on Friday evening, whilst the littlies of Maroochydore, Nambour & Hinterland, Coolum Beach and Noosa head to Pomona’s den for a big Sunday morning of 8’s and 10’s action.
Friday night will see a number of Roos v Roos games at Fishermans Rd with Eagles swooping to break the card up. Footy at Nambour & Hinterland, Noosa, Caloundra, Glasshouse Hinterland and Gympie keeping all the locals busy.
